    Gallery Prev Next Millican Flats, Deschutes Co, June 24 Uncas Skipper Hesperia uncas Size: Up to 1.4 inch wingspan ​ Key ID features: Above, male brownish orange darker wingtips with light orange spots. Above female brown with jagged row of light orange spots. Below dark greenish gray with lighter veins, and disjointed white bands joined by thin vein lines. ​ Similar species: Sandhill Skipper has light veins below but they are tan or yellowish. Nevada Skipper lacks light veins, and has the lowest segment of the outer spot band strongly offset on HW below. ​ Host plant: Grass species. Indian ricegrass (Achnatherum hymenoides ) is suspected in Oregon. ​ ​ Habitat: Sage-steppe, hot dry plains, alkali basins, arid canyons. ​ Range: Far southeast corner of Harney and Malheur counties, alkali and sage flats in southern Crook and northern Jefferson counties. ​ Season: Late May to late June ​ Abundance: Uncommon Conservation Status: Secure

FW below orange-brown with black spots, gray-brown border, submarginal row of black chevrons bordered in white. ​ Similar species: Silver-gray HW below is distinctive, lacking spots or orange. HW above has yellow patches adjacent to dark marginal band (sometimes missing), and a prominent triangular black spot in the center of the HW. Below jagged bands of striated brown, gray and tan, with prominent white comma mark (tipped on its side) in center of HW, often barbed at both ends. ​ Similar species: Light brown tones below separate this from other comma species. ​ Host plant: Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica ) . ​ Habitat: In riparian areas, forest openings. ​ Range: Throughout Oregon . ​ Season: Late February to early November. ​ Abundance: Common.     Gallery Prev Next Big Indian Gorge, Harney Co, June 20 - male Sagebrush Checkerspot Chlosyne acastus Size: Up to 1.75 inch wingspan ​ Key ID features: Male above, bands of pale orange and yellow-orange, separated by black lines, crescents and checks . Basal 1/3 of HW above sometimes black with little orange. Male often lighter than female above. Below bands of chalk-white and brick red with black veins and edges. More white below than other similar species. ​ Similar species: Northern Checkerspot darker above, and with off-white rather than white below. ​ Host plant: Several species including green rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus ), gray rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa ), desert yellow fleabane (Erigeron linearis ) and asters in the genus Dieteria . ​ Habitat: Sage desert, pinyon-juniper savanna, washes, gulches, canyons and brushy flats. ​ Range: Mostly below 5000 feet in SE Oregon deserts, and below 3000 feet in Columbia and Snake r iver basins . ​ Season: Late April to late June ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure

    Gallery Prev Next Prairie Farm Springs, Jefferson Co, July 1 Western Sulphur Colias occidentalis Size: 1.5 - 2.0 inches wingspan ​ Key ID features: Males above, bright lemony yellow with unbroken black border. Females above lighter yellow or cream, with less distinct black border. Below, central pearly "discal" spot in HW with single pinkish-brown ring, and few or no submarginal black or brown spots. HW below has black over-scaling, giving it a green cast. ​ Similar species: Clouded Sulphurs have heavier submarginal spots on HW below. Queen Alexandra's Sulphurs are larger, greener below, and usually lack pink discal spot-rim below. Host plant: Many species in the pea family. ​ ​ Habitat: Meadows, roadsides, dry steppe slopes and forest glades. ​ Range: Mountain ranges throughout Oregon, except Coast Range. ​ Season: early March to early November ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure

    Gallery Prev Next Izee Rd Meadow, Grant Co, July 1 - male Great Spangled Fritillary Argynnis cybele ​ AKA Speyeria cybele Size: Up to 3 inch wingspan ​ Key ID features: Male orange above with thin black veins, black shading near the body, black irregular lines inwardly, and bands of black spots and chevrons near wing edge. Female striking white to cream above with similar black markings as male. Below male has dark orange "disc" on HW with silvery-white spots and warm tan submarginal band. Below female has dark brown disc with silvery-white spots and tan to ivory submarginal band. ​ Similar species: Female Great Spangled is unmistakable. Male has lighter black markings above along wing edge than other greater fritillaries, and silver spots on HW disc below are much smaller in proportion to size of disc (disc looks more empty) in comparison. ​ Host plant: Violets (Viola ) especially Viola glabella (stream violet) . ​ Habitat: Open meadows, openings in oak-pine forest, lower slopes of mountains in eastern Oregon. ​ Range: Western and southwestern Oregon, Ochoco Mtns, Blue Mtns, Wallowa Mtns, Warner Mtns, Steens Mtn, Mt Jefferson area. ​ Season: Early June to early October. ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure .

Below striated bands of gray-brown and gray, and prominent curved (not pointed) white comma in center of HW, often barbed on one end. ​ Similar species: Satyr Comma has brown shades below, and barbed white comma on HW. Hoary comma lacks submarginal shading below. Varies significantly among subspecies especially below. Medium orange above with black veins, black shading near the body, black irregular lines inwardly, submarginal black spot band and black marking along margin like chain links, bolder on female. Below ground color of "disc" on HW generally light brown, with large silvery-white oval spots usually with darker halos or caps. ​ Similar species: Zerene and Callippe both have darker disc color below. ​ Hostplant: Violet (Viola ) species . ​ Habitat: Varies by ssp. in each region, including ridgetops, meadows, pumice flats and subalpine slopes. ​ Range: Found in southern Cascades, Siskiyou Mtns, Klamath Mtns, Ochocos, and in Wallowas and northeastern Blue Mtns. ​ Season: Mid-June to early September. ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure

FW above has curving band of ivory almost forming a "6" around one of the eyes, and two orange bars ringed in black on the leading edge. Relatively unmarked below, with irregular bands of pale tans and grays, and pale submedian row of spots on the HW. ​ Similar species: No other Oregon butterfly has large spots on FW and HW against lavender-gray ground color. ​ Host plant: A variety of species in the figwort family, including penstemons, paintbrushes, veronicas and monkeyflowers . ​ Habitat: Forest openings, riparian areas, subalpine meadows, mostly above 3,000 feet. ​ Range: Nearly all of southern half of Oregon, and both flanks of the Cascades from Wasco County south . ​ Season: Late May to late October ​ Abundance: Uncommon Conservation Status: Secure

Male blue above with dark wing borders. Female dark brown above with vague orange zigzag along trailing margin. Both sexes have checked fringe on FW. Below bluish-gray with black spots, and orange edges to submarginal black spots on HW. ​ Similar species: Best told from other Euphilotes blues by host-plant association, location and flight period. Host plant: Eriogonum nudum (bare-stem buckwheat), E. elatum (tall woolly buckwheat) and E. compositum (arrowleaf buckwheat). ​ Habitat: Well-drained sites where hostplant grows, including high plateaus, ridges, gravelly slopes and roadsides. ​ ​ Range: Western Cascade Range, Siskiyou Mtns, Klamath Mtns . ​ Season: Mid-April to early August ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure
