Below, bold gray-green marbling against white background and yellow veins. ​ Similar species: California Marble and Desert Marble are smaller. Desert Marble has pearly or shiny look to white areas. California Marble lacks white scaling on forewing cell bar. Host plant: Many cruciferous species. ​ Habitat: Open montane and foothill slopes, dry meadows and canyons, sage steppe habitats. ​ Range: All of eastern Oregon and southwestern Oregon south of Douglas County. ​ Season: Late March to late July ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure

Male blue above with narrow dark wing borders, little or no orange along trailing edge of HW. Female dark brown above with prominent orange zigzag along trailing margin. Both sexes have checked fringe on FW. Below bluish-gray with bold black spots, larger on FW, and broad orange submarginal line on HW. ​ Similar species: Best told from other Euphilotes blues by host-plant association, location and flight period. Host plant: Eriogonum heracleoides (Parsnip-flower buckwheat). ​ Habitat: Well-drained sites where host plant grows, including high plateaus, ridges and roadsides. ​ ​ Range: All of northeast Oregon, and in Warner Mountains and southern Deschutes County ​ Season: Late April to late June ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure

Notably graceful flight pattern. ​ Similar species: Mustard (margined) white has more delicate dark markings on veins below and lacks heavy black marks above Host plant: Douglas fir, Ponderosa pine and other pine species. ​ Habitat: Fir and pine forests, and in some urban areas near pines. ​ Range: Western Oregon and Ochoco Mtns, Blue Mtns and Wallowa Mtns. ​ Season: Late June to mid-October ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure

    Gallery Prev Next Williams Prairie, Crook Co, June 22 Silver-Bordered Fritillary Boloria myrina ​ ( Was Boloria selene) Size: Up to 2 inch wingspan ​ Key ID features: Above bright citrus orange with black veins, and black irregular lines, black bands of spots and chevrons that point inward. Checked fringe, light orange. Below HW is complex pattern of pearly silver/white patches, cream patches, burgundy patches and burgundy veins. Similar pattern on FW tip below, remainder of FW bright orange with black markings. ​ Similar species: Pacific Fritillary has softer black submarginal markings above, and submarginal black triangles that point outward. Below Pacific has softer pattern of mauve, lavender and pale orange in the outer half of HW. ​ Host plant: Violets, mostly Viola palustris (Marsh violet) and V. nephrophylla (Bog violet). ​ Habitat: Marshy fields, riparian areas with willows. ​ Range: Found in isolated colonies in Ochoco Mtns, Strawberry Mts, Wallowa Mtns. ​ Season: Late May to mid-August (varies by site) ​ Abundance: Locally common Conservation Status: Secure .

Outer margin of FW is concave, giving slightly hooked appearance to FW. ​ Similar species: Much larger than other Marbles, lacks orange on forewing of Sara Orangetip. Host plant: Crucifers, including several rockcresses. ​ ​ Habitat: Often found on South-facing slopes, on wooded canyons, gullies, washes, steep-walled ravines. ​ Range: Siskiyou Mtns and Warner Mtns. ​ Season: Early May to early July ​ Abundance: Uncommon Conservation Status: Secure

Female above light orange with black spots and borders. HW below two-toned, creamy yellow next to the body, and lilac in the outer half, with vague zigzag orange line (colors brighter in female). ​ Similar species: Purplish lacks distinctive two-toned HW below. Other coppers have white or grayish undersides. Host plant: Knotweeds (Polygonum). ​ Habitat: Mountain meadows, openings in fir and pine forests . ​ Range: All of Oregon's mountains except Coast Range. ​ Season: Mid-May to late August ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure

Sometimes one small eyespot on HW above. Below similar to above, but with HW having a more grizzled look crossed by zigzag dark lines and light vein lines. Very cryptic and difficult to spot when perched with wings closed. ​ Similar species: None. ​ Host plant: Grasses, but no specific species identified in Oregon . ​ Habitat: Grassy habitats including sage-steppe, plateaus, montane meadows and dry hillsides. ​ Range: Millican Flats area near Pine Mtn in Crook and Deschutes counties, Light Peak in Warner Mtns, Pueblo Mtns, Trout Creek Mtns. ​ Season: Late June to mid-August ​ Abundance: Uncommon Conservation Status: Secure

    Gallery Prev Next W Boundary Rd, Lane Co, April 12 Two-banded Checkered Skipper Pyrgus ruralis Size: Up to 1 inch wingspan ​ Key ID features: Above, Above very dark brown, with gray shading basally on FW, boldly checked fringes and bright white patches . White spots on FW in two rows that can look like an "x" to some. HW has bold spot bands, and a lone small white spot near the wing base (often covered). Below bands of brown, white and olive-gray on HW. ​ Similar species: Common Checkered Skipper is much lighter above and below, with more and longer white patches above. ​ Host plant: Checkermallows ( Sidalcea ) and wildflowers in the rose family like cinquefoil ( Potentilla ) and strawberry ( Fragaria ). ​ Habitat: Mountain meadows and roadsides. ​ Range: Cascade Range, Willamette Valley, Coast Range, Ochoco Mtns, Blue Mtns, Wallowa Mtns, Siskiyou Mtns, Klamath Mtns. ​ Season: Early March to early September ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure

Gold-hunter's Hairstreak Satyrium auretorum Size: 1.0 - 1.25 inches wingspan ​ Key ID features: Light brown above. Slightly darker brown below with variable uneven spot bands, and submarginal band of black chevrons, female more strongly marked. Tail barely noticeable, with adjacent blue frosted patch, and one or two of the chevrons with a small orange patch. ​ Similar species: Somewhat similar to Hedgerow HS, which has more defined median line on HW below. Mountain Mahogany HS is more grayish below, often with a more frosted look. Host plant: Oaks (Quercus ), primarily Oregon White Oak (Quercus garryana ) . ​ Habitat: Oak-pine stands and shrubby habitats near oaks. ​ ​ Range: Along California border in Jackson County and SE Klamath County. ​ Season: Early June to mid-July ​ Abundance: Uncommon Conservation Status: Secure

    Gallery Prev Next Arizona Cr, Pueblo Mtns, Harney Co, July 3 Weidemeyer's Admiral Limenitis weidemeyerii Size: Up to 3.5 inch wingspan ​ Key ID features: Above black with broad white band through FW and HW, small white patches near wingtips. Often with submarginal band of small white spots, and sometimes band of slightly larger orange spots just below white band on HW. Below bold white band through both wings, with bands of blue-gray and lavender crescents and dark red-brown patches. ​ Similar species: Superficially similar to Lorquin's Admiral, but lacks orange wingtips of that species. Hybridizes with Lorquin's Admiral, showing mix of traits from both species--see photos of form Friday . ​ Hostplant: Aspen (Populus tremuloides ), Willow ( Salix ) species, and shrubs in the rose family . ​ Habitat: Along or near waterways with willow and aspen. ​ Range: Found in Pueblo Mtns, Trout Cr Mtns, and Owyhee canyons in SE Oregon. ​ Season: Early June to late September. ​ Abundance: Uncommon Conservation Status: Secure

    Gallery Prev Next Frissell Ridge, Lane Co, July 17 Sylvan Hairstreak Satyrium sylvinus Size: 1.0 - 1.25 inches wingspan ​ Key ID features: Warm, toasty brown above. Below, lighter gray-brown with median pale black spot band. On HW below, dash or checkmark spot next to blue patch below tail. Blue patch not edged in orange inwardly. HW and FW below with vague submarginal band of black lines, only two or three of which are edged outwardly with orange near tail. ​ Similar species: California HS is generally more boldly marked, has black V-shaped spot next to the blue patch (not checkmark or dash), has orange on the inward edge of the HW blue patch, and has orange halos on black crescents along most of the outer margin below, often including the forewing . Host plant: Willows (Salix sp.) . ​ Habitat: Meadows, willow stands, and canyon slopes near water.​ ​ Range: East slope of Cascades, most of SE and SW Oregon except Gilliam, Morrow and Umatilla counties and Wallowa Mtns. ​ Season: Early May to mid-September ​ Abundance: Common Conservation Status: Secure
